During last Friday's service, we encountered a magical machine that couldn't install any updates. I actually suspect that we encountered the XY problem. The main complaint was that the computer had no sound.

First, we checked and found that there was sound in safe mode or other modes, and sometimes there was sound when starting up, indicating that it was not a hardware problem.

Next, we checked the drivers and found that they were installed but were disabled by Microsoft due to lack of signature.

Then, we looked for alternative drivers - the classmate tried using Driver Genius before, but it was full of advertisements - and found some, but Microsoft still didn't trust them. We also found the original drivers, which could be installed, but still, Microsoft didn't trust them.

Unable to find any suitable drivers, we started looking for solutions to use in the case of untrusted drivers. Generally, there are four methods -

The first method is temporary and requires setting trust every time the computer restarts - but through the first method, we confirmed that there was no problem with the hardware.

The second method is to use bcdedit to change testsigning, which is a method provided by Windows for test signing. However, after enabling it, there is always a watermark, and it seems to have become ineffective... and changing it requires disabling secure boot, which is quite troublesome.

The third method is also using bcdedit, but setting nointegritychecks. Unfortunately, it didn't work either.

The last method is through group policies, but unfortunately, the classmate's computer is the CORE version, a streamlined system without group policies, which caused many other problems mentioned later. The command to open group policies normally can be executed, theoretically, there should be group policies after restarting, but during the restart, it got stuck at "Unable to complete updates, undoing changes..." which was very absurd, and it was super slow. We tried several times...

In order to create group policies, we tried to upgrade the CORE version back to the normal version, which was a similar journey... during the restart, it got stuck at "Unable to complete updates, undoing changes..."

Then we tried reinstalling the system... the preparation for reinstalling the system was not very smooth either. First, the ISO file was damaged, the MD5 was the same but it was still damaged, and we suspected that the storage in the school's mirror server was incorrect. So we changed the source and re-downloaded it, and it was successful. Then, there was no guarantee that the data could be retained, so we waited for the classmate to confirm authorization, but that classmate was out dancing... so we went ahead with the reinstallation.

The reinstallation went quite smoothly, and the process is not described in detail. The data was not lost, and surprisingly, the driver was fixed by itself... the new driver was signed by Microsoft... anyway, it was solved by ourselves...

Restart, reinstall, repurchase, it didn't disappoint me...

Then we installed a few more updates and it was already past 3 o'clock...
